7th Annual International Conference on Managing Intellectual Property in Universities

“Success Stories: From Lab To The Market”

Once again, we are very happy and proud to announce that the International Conference on “Managing Intellectual Property in Universities” which became a traditional event at Boğaziçi University, will now be organized again with the meritorious contributions and collaborations of both Koç University and Middle East Technical University and this strategic collaboration of the three esteemed research universities of Turkey will continue on an annual basis.

The aims of these conferences are to raise awareness about intellectual property and to contribute both to the academia and the newly emerging Technology Transfer Ecosystem within the scope of adopted principles of intellectual property.

In addition to developing and promoting creativity and inventiveness, the protection of intellectual property rights and commercializing these IPR assets can only be made possible by raising awareness and fostering a sustainable ecosystem.

The collaboration of these three research universities, each of which prioritize to develop academic excellence and a free research environment in the sake of science as a primary objective, as well as to contribute to the society at large by creating an innovative, ecofriendly, more prosperous and happy world with the cooperation of industry/public sector and academia in an adopted sense of social responsibilities, should be a beneficial example for all universities and research institutions in Turkey and the region to act together in order to promote science and social & economic development.

“IP Management @ Universities” (IP2017) international conference will be hosted again at Albert Long Hall, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul this fall on 12th and 13th October, 2017.

“IP Management @ Universities” conferences are always organized also in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a self-funding agency of the United Nations (UN) with 187 member states; European Patent Organization (EPO), an intergovernmental organization that was set up on the basis of the European Patent Convention (EPC) which serves 38 member states; the Turkish Patent Institute (Turk Patent), an independent legal entity of the Turkish Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

This year’s conference will focus on  “Success Stories: From Lab To The Market”, and we are honored to have Ozyegin University, Ulysses Advisory Group,  Department for Transition and Developed Countries (TDC), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and Boğaziçi University Alumni Association Business Angels (BUBA) as unique individual panel sponsors, whereas we are, of course, also very proud to have Elginkan Fundation,  ODTU-TEKNOKENT, Arçelik, Borusan, Clarivate Analytics, GE Ventures (GE), Ford Otosan, AstraZeneca, Stanavodka, Accelerating The Commercialization of Technology (ACT), GUN + Partners, Ankara Patent, Yalçıner Patent, Destek Patent,  Abainnolab, MineSoft, Boğaziçi University Alumni Association (BÜMED) and Ortaköy Princess Hotel, and American Business Forum in Turkey as the main sponsors of our conference.

After Boğaziçi University Rector Prof.Mehmed Özkan’s welcome speech and the keynote speech and opening remarks of CCO of Arçelik Ragıp Balcıoğlu, by far the leading and global champion of R&D and IPR in Turkey, which also regards its human resources as its most important capital, Arçelik develops new inventions together with the researchers in 20 separate R&D Centers around the globe and consequently protects these inventions with patents around the globe. Arcelik’s far and away leader position in patent applications of Turkey signifies the importance they attached to innovation. 45% of all WIPO PTC (Patent Corporation Treaty) applications in Turkey, in deed,  belongs to Arçelik A.Ş. Every year, approximately 130 patent applications are made.  ARÇELİK, ranking 129st in 2009, is the first and only Turkish company which is listed among top 500 of world patent league announced by “World Intellectual Property Organization” (WIPO). 10% of all domestic patents produced in the past 5 years belongs to Arçelik.

After this keynote speech, the Turkish Minister of Science, Technology & Industry Faruk Özlü will commence this year’s conference.

As it was the case in the previous IP Conferences, the first panel is always devoted to discussing international, regional and national strategies of public institutions on "The Role of TTOs in Enhancing Academic IP Commercialization on International, Regional and National Scale".
This will be followed by Royal Ulysess Advisory Group’s panel where “the mindset & behaviors that support or inhibit the successful exploitation of innovation and entrepreneurship” will be discussed by a panel of experts.

The first day of IP2017 will conclude with discussing two successful spin-offs; one from Bogazici University, and the other from Middle East Technical University in separate panels whereby the inventor team, consultant for Proof-of-Concept and Investment Analysis phases, investor(s), attorney-at-law and also a design team contributor will share with IP2017 participants their review of the investment stage from the initial pitch to signing the shareholder agreement and will also share their future expectations from these start-ups.

The second and last day of IP2017 will have five panels. Department for Transition and Developed Countries (TDC), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will conduct a unique panel as a round-table where experts from the region and individual states will share their strategies and needs visa vie “University IP Policy” and how it effects and can be utilized in leading to successful spin-offs from campuses.

Two different panels will be focusing on unique cases and successful best practices across the globe, namely; Israeli Experience and USA Experience. Each panel will have experienced experts and executives from the respective fields and regions to highlight their unique “Entrepreneurial Ecosystems”.

This year, Ozyegin University will chair the “Legal Panel” of IP2017, where both the new IPR Law that came into effect last January in Turkey and also new technical tools, enhancements and methodology for IPR and Portfolio Management will be discussed.
