Title: A PARADIGM FRAMEWORK FOR MANAGEMENT RESEARCH:VALIDATION AND LEGITIMIZATION ISSUES

Date:  Tuesday, 12 December 2017

Time:   11:30-13:00

Place:  CASE 127

Abstract: This paper offers a paradigm framework for management research that takes into consideration both validation and legitimization issues. Validation issues are at the heart of a process called simplification, a process that entails ontology- based problem definition, epistemology-required theory building, and methodology-guided model construction. The degree of soundness of a simplification process is associated with a concept called validity alignment.  Opposed to this process of simplification there is another process termed complexification, a process that corresponds to the implementation of research findings. It is fittingly called complexification process because making research findings operational in practice is much more than being trouble-free and undemanding. In fact, no research finding can be implemented unless accepted as useful and legitimate, if possible, by its all intended users, leading to some sort of complexity in host organizations. Such complexity issues are to be dealt with proficiently in all units of an organization in order to achieve a smooth implementation process. This process demands a consistent legitimacy alignment. In fact both simplification and complexification processes are needed since they together complement one another and one without the other is less meaningful if an assured progressive impact is targeted in organizations through research.
