Abstract:

Information Interaction is an emerging area of study that investigates how people perceive, use, and interact with information, building on several fields such as human-computer interaction, visual analytics, data management, and computer-supported cooperative work. In this talk I will argue for human-machine cooperation as the ideal form of information interaction as I describe an overview of my work in this field from ethnographic field studies in data centers to visual analytics on multi-dimensional data. I will specifically focus on my latest project, LabBook, to support collaborative data science, through a knowledge graph of information activities across users and systems and contextual search that leverages the context in information seeking activity. I will finish by describing my vision for data-driven scientific research to accelerate discovery.
