About the Colloquium Speakers 

Richard Bellamy is the Director of the Max Weber Post-doctoral programme of the European University Institute. He has written 8 monographs to date, edited or co-edited a further 25 volumes and is the author of over a 100 journal articles and book chapters. His books include Modern Italian Social Theory: Ideology and Politics from Pareto to the Present, Liberalism and Modern Society: An Historical Argument; (with Darrow Schecter) Gramsci and the Italian State; Liberalism and Pluralism: Towards a Politics of Compromise; Rethinking Liberalism; Political Constitutionalism and Citizenship: A Very Short Introduction and, as editor or co-editor, Victorian Liberalism; Constitutionalism in Transformation; Pluralism and Liberal Neutrality; Citizenship and Governance in the EU; Political Concepts; The Cambridge History of Twentieth Century Political Thought; Lineages of European Citizenship; Making European Citizens. He has also edited scholarly editions of works by Beccaria, Bobbio and Gramsci and numerous journal special issues, including most recently on Courts and Representative Democracy and on Representative Democracy in the EU: Does One Come at the Expense of the Other?

His publications have been translated into several languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Czech, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.

 

Mattias Kumm is the Inge Rennert Professor of Law and has joind NYU in 2000. His research  focuses on basic issues and contemporary challenges in Global, European and Comparative Public Law. Since 2010 he also holds a Research Professorship on "Rule of Law in the Age of Globalization" and is Managing Head of the Rule of Law Center at the WZB Social Science Research Center in Berlin and Professor of Law at Humboldt University. He has taught at leading universities wordwide, and has held professorial appointments at Harvard, Yale, and the EUI. He is on the Board of various International Journals and Professional Societies and is Founding Co-Editor in Chief of "Global Constitutionalism" (CUP). Kumm holds a JSD from Harvard Law School and has pursued studies in law, philosophy and political sciences at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel, Paris I Pantheon Sorbonne and Harvard University before he joined NYU. He is a member of the Advisory Board of CGPL.
