Call for Applications: “Insignia: Power of Symbols”
Koç University ARHA Undergraduate Symposium
Symposium date: October 14th, 2016
The Department of Archaeology and History of Art at Koç University invites applications for
the 1st ARHA Undergraduate Symposium on October 14th, 2016 under the topic “Insignia:
Power of Symbols”.
Throughout history symbols have carried various meanings related to power. They have
been used to portray hierarchical structures, social boundaries, status, and legitimacy. This
symposium will explore different ways to interpret symbols of power through a variety of
disciplinary and theoretical approaches including historical, psychological, literary, art
historical, and archaeological studies.
We are looking for proposals from Koç University undergraduates from all disciplines who
are interested in the topic. Furthermore, by this symposium, we want to encourage
independent academic research apart from course related papers. We are open to all
interdisciplinary and theoretical approaches to the topic of symbols.
Proposals should be no more than 100 words, and should explain your research questions
and your approach to the topic. Proposals should be submitted to bdinc@ku.edu.tr. The
submission deadline is May 6th, 2016.
After the selection of the proposals, participants are expected to write a paper of no more
than 2500 words. On the symposium date, a presentation of a paper no more than 15
minutes is expected. The submission deadline of the papers is September 15th, 2016.
