"Perinatal Vitamin D Deficiency: What kind of problem is it? How can it be prevented?"

Over the last 10 years a spike in interest in vitamin D deficiency and its effect not only on extra-skeletal tissues but also on general human health has been observed in our country and all over the world. In our country, a nationwide ‘vitamin D prophylaxis augmentation programme’ was initiated in 2005 using a simple but effective method which included free distribution of vitamin D drops to all new-borns and infants (0–12 months) visiting primary healthcare stations throughout the country. This programme has reduced clinical rickets cases and severe vitamin D deficiencies dramatically in Turkey.

However, perinatal vitamin D deficiency is still an important problem. The risk factors for maternal vitamin D deficiency are: low availability of overhead sun, darker skin pigmentation, low amounts of outdoor activity, and excessive skin coverage by clothing. The Institute of Medicine’s recommended dose for supplementing vitamin D in pregnancy is 600 IU/day. Vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy is primarily required for the prevention of late hypocalcemia in the new-born period. In countries where maternal vitamin D deficiency is common, a dose of 1200 iu/day or more is recommended. In 2011, the Turkish Ministry of Health implemented a vitamin D supplementation program that recommended 1,200 IU/day for women during the last 6 months of pregnancy. This program is expected to decrease prevalence of perinatal vitamin D deficiency and neonatal hypocalcemia due to vitamin D deficiency. In this lecture, our findings regarding to vitamin D propylaxis augmentation program and vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy will be presented.
