Past research has shown that positive contact between group members is likely to reduce prejudice and improve intergroup harmony and peace in many intergroup contexts. Recent trends in contact literature, however, have questioned a) whether contact improves positive attitudes among minority group members, b) whether contact improves positive attitudes in conflict-ridden socio-cultural contexts, c) whether indirect forms of contact improve intergroup attitudes, and d) whether contact leads to any unintended consequences such as reduced collective action tendencies. The current talk would attempt to provide answers to these newly emerging research questions in contact literature by providing theoretical and empirical findings from a series of studies conducted in the Turkish-Kurdish intergroup context and discuss the implications of these studies for the implementation of contact strategies in various settings.
