VALUE OF META-ANALYSIS: A PERSONAL STORY

Meta-analysis is a type of research design widely used in many disciplines of science. Meta-analysis is combining the results of several existing studies that address a set of related research hypotheses.  Unlike systematic reviews, which are usually narrative in style, meta-analysis ultimately leads to a quantified synthesis.

The first meta-analysis was performed in 1904 by Karl Pearson, an English mathematician and biostatistician, in an attempt to overcome the limited statistical power in small individual studies. The term ‘‘meta-analysis’’ was introduced in 1970’s by Gene Glass, an American researcher working in social sciences. Statistical theories of meta-analysis were advanced between 1980-2000. Meta-analysis has several important advantages over other types of research design, such as higher statistical power, ability to deal with information overload and to examine between-study variation including moderators to explain the variation.

In this seminar, the author will also present his own work that used meta-analytic methods in the field of medicine, which ultimately lead to major changes in international treatment guidelines.  Importance of unexpected adverse events in clinical trials (such as cancer), as well as differential response of patient subgroups (e.g. in response to cardiac pacemakers) and comparative effectiveness of by-pass surgery vs. stents will be discussed.
