Abstract         : Semiconductor lasers have developed significantly in the last few decades as key components in industrial and consumer applications mainly due to their small size, performance, and electronic integration. Emerging and future applications need further improvements in these features, but fundamental limitations hinder advancements and require fundamental studies and innovative approaches. In this talk, I will present novel architectures in semiconductor lasers to address these needs. I will discuss the output power limitation mechanisms and demonstrate our experimental results showing significant improvement of the laser output by using gain and photon profile engineering. Using a multi-section waveguide approach, we realized facet cooling in high power semiconductor lasers, which is key for improved operating performance and reliability. I will also demonstrate a new micro-laser fabrication method we developed to overcome the restrictions and problems of the current technology and present our efforts towards nanoscale lasers.
